January 2018 Favorites

February 23, 2018lifewithcattitude

I seriously cannot believe we are already OVER HALFWAY THROUGH FEBRUARY? How is it that the first half of this month already feels like it’s gone by fast than the entire month of January? Was that just me? Okay then.

January was a good month for me. I finally got out of training for my job and moved on to the actual work, and with that, I got a small raise. I made the active decision to start my work from home journey. It’s slow and steady, but it’s coming! I got serious about self-care and putting myself first when it is necessary. All in all, I decided to make January 2018 a way better start to my year than January 2017. With that, I’ve made a resolution to start taking stock of what I love and what makes me happy instead of focusing on the negatives. I could go on and on about the deep revelations to which I’ve come, but how ‘bout I tell you my favorite things from January instead?

Beauty

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette

Some of these are products I’ve had for a while and have been on a sort of “kick” with them, or they’re products I’ve heard about for years and finally took the plunge and bought them. Here they are, in no particular order!

I’m going to be completely honest about this one. I bought it back in the fall simply because of the hype, and because I was finally making good money at my then job, and I felt like splurging on another eyeshadow palette.

Did I use it right away? No. I let it sit in my drawer for a few weeks before using it once on an impromptu date night with Travis. I even contemplated giving it away! The pinks and reds kind of intimidated me with my fair skin.

But something told me to break it back out and give it another try. I’m so glad I did because I am in LOVE with this palette! It’s the palette I’ve used for my last few looks for Valentine’s Day. The shadows are so incredibly pigmented and creamy and blend like a dream! This palette is very well worth the $42.

If you’re contemplating purchasing this or another nice palette and you’re not sure, read my post about Urban Decay!

Mac Fix Plus – This. This. THIS. Where has this been all my life? I’ve heard about this stuff for YEARS (we’re talking 2012, back when I was a makeup newbie). I, of course, shrugged it off. $26 for basically water? No thanks! I finally walked into Ulta and talked with the MAC girl there and she sold me on it and let’s just say… This is a real game-changer!

If you have awful dry skin and struggle with foundation application like I do, you need this bottle of mineral water in your life! It is an amazing priming spray AND setting spray. My makeup looks and feels fantastic all day long! The girl told me that even with daily use, one bottle lasts about four to five months. A very worthy investment!

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lip Balm

I inherited this from my sister after she used it once and she didn’t like it.

I’m so incredibly self-conscious about my teeth so most of my makeup looks do not incorporate a lip color mostly because of that (and also if you have a dramatic eye you don’t need a dramatic lip but maybe I’m just old-fashioned).

But I always feel a bit lopsided when I don’t have at least something on my lips, so this is a great way to add just a little light color on the lips without the drying sticky feeling of lip gloss or lipstick. I highly recommend!

BH Cosmetics Signature Rose Gold 13-Piece Brush Set

I have used the same discombobulated set of brushes for about 8 years now. Mostly because they’re pretty good quality, but mostly because I didn’t feel like buying any more. I had what I needed. But, as an aspiring makeup artist, I knew it would be important to present myself professionally, and a matching brush set was just the way to go. BH Cosmetics has such quality products that I knew their brushes wouldn’t let me down. I was totally right!

This brush set was $18 with shipping and a cute brush holder included, and they have yet to disappoint me! They have helped with crafting my smokey eyes soooo much!

I wholeheartedly recommend this brand for their amazingly priced products that could easily be dupes for high-end products!

Favorite Songs

“Going to California” (Led Zeppelin)

This is one of those songs where you hear OF it your whole life and have an idea of what it sounds like in your head, and when you finally hear it for the first time, it’s way better and you fall in love with it. The first time I heard this song on Pandora, I was stuck in traffic coming home from Buckhead in rush-hour (literal pain in the ass) but I played the song on constant repeat on Youtube to keep me entertained for the rest of the drive. I really love that this song is so mellow and such a stark contrast to their other songs. (Bonus for former emo/scene kids, Evanescence’s Amy Lee absolutely nailed a cover of this song)

“Wish You Were Here” (Pink Floyd)

This is another one of those songs where it’s not what you imagined; it’s better, and it’s so easy to get it stuck in your head on a daily basis. Even right now as I’m writing this, it’s stuck in my head. I’m not the biggest Pink Floyd fan, but I do love this song!

Lord Huron’s “Strange Trails” album

Anybody else fall in love with a song from a movie or TV show and immediately search for it on Youtube? Yeah, me too! This is me when I discovered the band Lord Huron through Shameless back in the fall. I found one song, and then I found another song on Pandora, which led me to this album. I’ve listened to it a lot in the car on the way home from work and when I’m brainstorming blog posts. It’s such a nice mellow sound with raw talent. If you’ve never heard of this band, go find them on Youtube now!

“Thinkin’ ‘Bout Something” (Hanson)

Yes. You read that right. I know what you’re thinking: “Wait, are we back in the 90s?” Nope! These once teen heartthrobs are… Now 30-year-old heartthrobs who are STILL creating new music and doing tours! (PS: it really helps that all three of them have aged with the same grace as fine whiskey in an oak barrel) This song is a great punchy hit for when you’re feeling in a real revenge-y mood. Give it a listen!

Well, that about wraps it for January! What were some of your favorite beauty products or music for the month of January? Let me know in the comments!

Stay beautiful[ly woke], my friends.
