May 2018 Favorites/Summer Must-Haves
Summer is literally my least favorite season. It’s the worst. I live in the South, and summer here lasts through October or November, so while I enjoy the first week or so, I’m very quickly over it but have to endure it for another four or five months. It’s awful. Humid heat is not kind to us curvy gals.
HOWEVER, that is not to say that you can’t have a killer skincare/makeup routine to help you and your skin survive the brutal Southern humid heat that makes you feel five pounds heavier.
Anyone who knows me knows that I love going full-on glam whenever I can, but when the temp is almost in the triple digits every single day, wearing a full face of foundation and contour is not usually on the to-do list, especially if you’re just going to sweat it off. So, in the last few weeks, I have perfected my summer/minimal makeup routine and I’m excited to share it with you! I also decided to make this my May Favorites because I wore nothing but this with the exception of one outing with my best friend where we went full on glam.
First up, skin care. It took me a painfully long time to realize that makeup is only as good as the base on which you put it, so if you don’t take care of your skin, no amount of makeup will fix that. I started using my It Works toner on a daily basis after showering or washing my face, and I seriously think that was the game changer.
Pause: no. Before you ask or say anything, no, I’m not trying to sell you this toner. I bought this toner months ago and have only just started to use it. I don’t really sell It Works anymore. I kept my membership to buy the products for myself, but I’ve stopped trying to sell them. I’m simply including this product because it just became a part of my regiment. If you happen to have any questions, cool, but I promise from the bottom of my heart this is not an It Works sales post. Unpause.
After using the toner, while my face is still damp, I spray about two or three sprays of my Mac Fix Plus. I talked about this stuff in my January Favorites, and I’m almost out, that’s how much I love it! Once my face is dry and supple (show of hands if you hate using that word), then it’s time to move on to the makeup!
In lieu of foundation, I have started using my trusty Neutrogena tinted moisturizer. I’ve been using this particular brand for years. If you happen to have any other recommendations feel free to shout them out. I use just one pump and maybe another half if I know I need some serious SPF (another super important factor to surviving Southern heat).
Once I have that base, I use my Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin concealer.
This has become my drugstore holy grail concealer, and I’d dare say it’s a dupe for Tarte Shape Tape. I’ll put it below my eyes to cover up the dark circles, my nose, my eyes to prime for eyeshadow, and my forehead. If I need it anywhere else, I’ll dab a little circle over a blemish.
I’ve been using Wet n Wild’s Brulee eyeshadow to set my concealer so it’s not tacky for my smokey eyes for months, but lately I’ve just been using it as the eyeshadow.
Then I began using their Sugar shade as a highlight in the inner corner to make my eyes look brighter. If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll put a little on my brow bone as a highlight.
For mascara, I finally dumped my Maybelline Falsies because it was doing nothing in terms of length and volume except making my lashes super heavy and fall flat. It was time to go. At the recommendation of an old college roommate, I finally gave the Maybelline Lash Sensational a try.
You guys, this is it. This is the holy grail drugstore foundation. Other than the trusty Maybelline Great Lash, I don’t think I’ll ever buy another drugstore foundation. This does an amazing job of not only lengthening my lashes, but it doesn’t weigh them down so they stay up all day! My only little complaint is that I seem to have a hard time not getting mascara on my eyelid with the tip touching it, but a Q-tip fixes it quickly!
Of course, I can’t go without brows. For that, I’ve still been using my BH Cosmetics Studio Pro Brow Pomade in the shade Auburn. I talked about how much I love it in my BH Cosmetics post here.
For the finishing touches, I use the E.L.F. Blush and Bronzer Duo.
I only put the bronzer in the hollows of my cheeks, and then a little blush on the apples of my cheeks just to add some color. After that, I use two more sprays of Mac Fix Plus to set the makeup.
I love this little routine. It’s much easier than full-on glam, and my skins feels better and can actually breathe! Not to mention, it takes less than TEN MINUTES, which really adds to also having a much shorter commute to work! I get so many compliments about how “fresh” my face looks.
I honestly needed this change in my routine, because while getting really glammed up is super fun, I just don’t have that time in the morning. Maybe once I can actually make myself get up on time without snoozing the alarm, I’ll get back to the daily glam!
So, with all of that said, I’ve got a few questions for you:
- What’s your favorite season?
- Do you have a good summer makeup routine?
- What’s your holy grail drugstore product?
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
