6 Blog Mistakes You Could Be Making Without Knowing It

December 5, 2018lifewithcattitude

Let’s face it, blogging is no easy feat! Starting a blog can be one of the best but also one of the most difficult things you do because there’s just so much to know! After almost a year of blogging on and off, I have been able to put together a list of blogging mistakes I notice around me that people do that hurts their blog. These are mistakes I’ve made personally, friends have told me they made, or things I just happen to notice. And let me put a disclaimer out there. I’m not putting this out there to try to say that I’m perfect! I’m hoping that someone sees this, fixes whatever mistake they’re making, and goes on to have an amazing blog that brings home the bacon!

What blogging mistakes could you be making?

A Click-bait Title With No Delivery

Honestly, this is one of the biggest blogging mistakes I see on Pinterest all the time. Maybe it’s Pinterest’s fault, or maybe the blogger doesn’t realize the link is broken. But nothing irks me more than clicking through a post with an interesting title and then seeing a long post that has almost nothing to do with the title. I get it, you want the clicks for traffic reports, but that’s like clicking on a Youtube video with one second of relevant information. If you’re going to promote a post with the title, “How to Make 2k A Month Blogging,” not many people are going to want to sift through a long post about what your kids ate that day to get to how you started your blog for money. If it’s in the title, that’s gotta be your post. Don’t waste your readers’ time.

Promoting Products You Don’t Believe In

Nothing will exhaust you or kill your blog faster than accepting any and every sponsored deal or collaboration that comes your way. This is a blogging mistake you want to avoid at all costs! I can easily sniff out bloggers who accepted a sponsored post solely for the money and not because they trusted the product. Not only will it make you look lackluster with all these different products, your readers will not trust your judgment and eventually will leave. I can’t even tell you how many collabs I’ve turned down because the company seemed shady or what they were offering had nothing to do with my niche and they just wanted sales. You’ve got to maintain integrity when blogging!

Not Self-Hosting (If You’re Wanting Income)

Bottom line is, if you want to monetize your blog in any capacity, self-hosted is the way to go. I mentioned in this particular blog post about which host I went with, and that’s Siteground. I chose them because of their impeccable customer service, fast loading, clean interfaces, and the amazing price! Come on, $3.95 a month? It might be a stretch to pay for the 3-year package, so just start out with the 1-year and dip your toe in the water.

Broken Affiliate Links

This blogging mistake takes a bit of diligence to fix. One day I spent 3 hours fixing affiliate links on my old posts. Every once in a while you have to go through and check to make sure your links aren’t broken. Why? Well, for one, it makes you lose out on potential income! Can you imagine your readers’ frustration when they want to use your link but the page is expired? You just lost out! Keep your links intact!

Having a Messy Appearance

Another way for me to immediately click off of someone’s blog is if its appearance is jumbled in general. Don’t fret though, this blogging mistake is easily fixable! It’ll really benefit you in the long run to pay a little money for a nice minimalistic theme that looks good on both desktop AND mobile devices (another mistake I see). Make sure you have a nice professional looking headshot instead of a grainy looking selfie for your profile picture. It takes constant tweaking, but your appearance will come together!

Posting Too Frequently

I guess this doesn’t really count as a blogging mistake; it’s more of trial and error. Now, don’t let this be a be-all-end-all, you find whatever rhythm and pace works best for you. However, most of the bigger and more “successful” bloggers I follow average about 1-2 posts a week, so that every post can be the best they can be. Posting multiple times a week with no substantial content hurts more than posting less frequent, but more substantial, posts. Again, it all comes down to your pace, but keep your readers in mind.

I really hope this helped you, and I am always here to field questions and help in any way I can! I hope everyone has a great rest of their week!

Its like you learn my thoughts! You seem to understand a lot about this, like you wrote the guide in it or something.
I feel that you simply can do with a few p.c. to power the message home a little bit, but other than that, that is great blog.
A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.

This design is wicked! You definitely know how to keep a
reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent
job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you
    presented it. Too cool! http://www.midasuser.cn/bbs/home.php?mod=space&uid=1131545

Hey there! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice
from an established blog. Is it very difficult to set up
your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick.

I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure where to begin. Do you have
    any tips or suggestions? Thanks
