Mom’s Birthday Weekend Celebration!

Someone special in my life had a birthday this past week!

That’s right, the beautiful woman on the right, my mother!

We decided to have a fairly low-key birthday, since we’ve all been so busy with work, but we still managed to have so much fun!

On Friday night, we decided to have a low-energy night since we had a big hike ahead of us! My sister baked some delicious sugar free, gluten free blueberry muffins. They were amazing!

We each cooked our own dinners and then headed upstairs to watch a movie. Somehow we ended up deciding on A Christmas Prince. You know, because the Christmas obsession in my family runs deep! As per usual, my sister tuckered out about 30 minutes in, and Mom and I were not too far behind! We decided to call it a night around 10.

We woke up super early the next morning to pack all our snacks and waters. We left the house around 8:30 to head to Kennesaw. We thought we were going to hike a 5 mile trail until we realized the trail was 5 miles to the top, so 10 miles all together. So at the last minute, we decided to hike a shorter trail. Since we had to meet up with my dad’s side of the family for lunch at 1, that was our best option.

Whoever wrote the article that said this trail was “moderate” can catch these hands. There was NOTHING “moderate.” It was such a grueling trail! I literally had to stop not even 50 yards in because it was such a steep beginning. There was a little bit of a flat area… and then it just became a game of rock climbing.

There were way more rocks than trail. By about a mile in, I could already feel my ankles starting to give out.

We finally had to call it at about a mile and a half in, seeing that we grossly underestimated how long it was going to take for the hike. We didn’t account for all the stopping and climbing we had to do.

On the way down, I rolled my ankle and I also slipped and fell. Luckily I didn’t sprain it or anything. But it still hurts a little bit.

Overall, yes the hike was grueling, but the views were pretty awesome! And it was just fun to get out in nature since it FINALLY cooled down! I am so over this heat, y’all, it’s not even funny.

After the hike, we met up with my dad’s side of the family for a big get-together. We try to have monthly or bimonthly get togethers since we’re all pretty scattered throughout the city. This time we decided to meet up in Kennesaw because my aunt and uncle, the current oldest members, live near Rome and we felt it was fair to head towards them this time!

It was just great to see them. With my last two jobs in healthcare being so crazy, I didn’t get to see them for any of the holidays last year, and I only got to go to the summer cookout back in May. We always get such a big table so that everyone can eventually change seats to talk to a new group. We ended up staying for about 3 hours, including time spent in the parking lot after we had already hugged once, took a picture, hugged again, and stood in the parking lot talking. We are a very Southern family in that sense!

After lunch, I was worn out. All of my energy was streamlining to my ankle, and I had an awful headache. We hurried home and I immediately took a nap, and it felt goooooooood. After everyone rested and got their own naps, we decided to have dinner outside!

Not going to lie, we didn’t stay out there but for maybe 30 minutes because it was so damn windy! I had my leftover steak and potatoes, while Mom and Caroline had some chicken Caroline brought. After dinner, I had to go to bed SUPER early because I had to be up for work at 4:45 (ew).

On Sunday, I worked 7 hours and got off at 1, at which point I doubled home to take a nap because I struggled to stay awake all through work. I’m a morning person, but I do NOT function that early! Mom and Caroline had been out for church and a tennis match for Mom. They came home to join me in nap-taking.

We winded down the weekend by watching some Frasier on Netflix. After a dinner of salmon and veggies, I decided to pack up and head home, where I excitedly greeted Travis because I hadn’t seen him all weekend! It’s amazing how someone drives you crazy but you miss them the second you’re gone!

Overall, this was a super fun weekend and I’m so glad we could spoil the crap out of my mom! She deserves literally everything.
