Dear Class of 2020

If you are a senior or you have a child who is a senior this year, this post is for you/them.

Dear Class of 2020,

I see you.

All the hard work you’ve put in to get to your last year of high school/college/trade school.

I see you.

Every quiet night when it feels like your whole dorm/apartment/house is asleep but you’re still working on that damn paper/project and you just want to go to bed.

I see you.

For the athletes, every practice/game where you left everything out on the court/field.

I see you.

We all see you.

Look, I can’t even pretend to understand what it feels like to have the rug pulled out from under you and have what feels like your entire last semester literally cancelled. Prom? No way. Awards ceremonies? Uh-uh. I can’t even imagine.

But let me tell you something, graduating seniors. Nothing about this pandemic diminishes your hard work in any way. Your grit and your hustle cannot be taken away from you. You busted your butt to get here, and you deserve to be celebrated.

I may not be able to throw an awards ceremony for every graduating senior in the world but I promise you, we are all cheering from a government-mandated-safe-social-distance.

I am so damn proud of each and every one of you. I wish that I could properly articulate that in a way that makes this crapfest any better. I really do.

Your parents are proud of you. Your family is proud of you. Your friends are proud of you. I promise.

So to everyone, and I mean everyone–first generation college kids, athletes, Honors students, average students, literally everyone. I am so proud of you. You’ve done something wonderful that not everyone does. Even if you’re not getting your commencement, I promise, you’ve accomplished something amazing. And no one, NOT EVEN THE GOVERNMENT, can take that away from you.
